If you happen to be in Athens for a single day but yet wish to see the city, you’ll have to plan it out right. One day in Athens might not be enough to explore all its hidden little corners, but the Visit Greece team has tried to come down with a walk-plan around Athens’ most fascinating spots.

Start your stroll early in the morning from Panepistimiou Avenue. Make a stop at the Neoclassical buildings to enjoy the view of the University, the Academy and the National Library, known as the Athenian Trilogy, which are renowned for their architectural style and are weighed down by history.

From here, head towards Syntagma Square to the Greek Parliament. Take a moment to look at the Evzones, wearing their traditional costume, while guarding the Monument of the Unknown Soldier. Don’t miss a walk through the National Gardens found right next to the Parliament. Continue your journey to the picturesque district of Plaka and wander around its narrow winding streets that lead up to the Acropolis. There is no need to mention that you must pay a visit to this unique monument as well as as to the excellent Acropolis Museum.

Proceed down on Dionysiou Areopagitou pedestrian street towards the historical area of Thiseio. On your left you’ll see Filopappou Hill and on your right the archaeological site of Ancient Agora. The district of Thiseio is adjacent to Psiri and Monastiraki areas; all boasting of charming cafes, fashionable restaurants and traditional Greek tavernas. Try local cuisine, wines, beers, and other drinks. Don't forget to finish you meal with a Greek coffee accompanied by sweets.

Carry on with shopping - if you are up to it - and visit the traditional Monastiraki Flea Market. Head uphill towards Syntagma though Ermou Street, the main shopping city street. If you still have time to spend and want more, go back down Ermou Street, walk by Thiseio and follow the pedestrian street towards Gazi. On your right hand side you’ll pass by the Archaeological site of Kerameikos, the cemetery of ancient Athens. Continue towards Gazi, a hotspot area of Athens, where bars, cafes and clubs will keep you entertained.

As you complete this quick tour around the City of Athens we are convinced you’ll be planning a longer visit shortly.
